Obituary

Gastonia
Mr. Hagan died on January 23, 2010, at the age of almost 103 years old. He was born in Leoma, Tennessee, on February 6, 1907, to Sue Dotson and Andrew Allen Hagan. He married Eva Wilson in 1929 and they moved to Gastonia in l932. In 1945 he became the Pure Oil Distributor in the area, and in 1955 he formed Hagan Oil Company. He retired in 1972, and his grandson now runs Hagan-Kennington Oil Company. Mr. Hagan was the oldest member of Holland Memorial 668 Masonic Lodge and a past member of the Evening Lions Club.
His wife preceded him in death, and his survivors are his three daughters and sons-in-law Betty H. and F. G. Hilbish of Kannapolis, Geraldine H. and Manfred Johnston of Gastonia, Freida H. and Delmus Neesmith of Carolina Beach, North Carolina, and his dear friend and companion Merle Costner. He is survived by eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren , thirteen great-grandchildren, and seven step-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hagan was a long-time member of First Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and held various other offices. An avid fisherman, he delighted in hosting fish-fry dinners at Covenant Village, the retirement home where he lived for the last 17 years. He also loved to garden and shared tomatoes with his neighbors there through his 101st year. An ardent Yankee and Braves fan, he enjoyed trips to Florida for spring practice, attending the World Series in New York with his grandsons ; and in his later years his grandson would take him and friends to Atlanta to see the Braves. Until two years ago, he swam every morning and drove until he was 101. He loved traveling, taking his grandchildren on wonderful trips throughout the world. He was a kind, compassionate and generous person, giving financial aid to young people to attend college, helping a number of family members start a new business, and always lovingly supportive to his family. His keen wit, sense of humor and love of life will be greatly missed.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the nursing staff at Covenant Village for their loving and devoted care of Mr. Hagan. He found a warm and caring community of friends and caretakers there.
There will be a private graveside service held at Gaston Memorial Park led by his grandson Dr. Mike Johnston, and a Celebration of Life will be held at Covenant Village from 2-4 o'clock on Monday, January 25, 2010.
The family requests memorials be sent either to First Baptist Church, PO Box 6298, Gastonia, N. C. 28056, or to Covenant Village Benevolence Fund, Covenant Village, 1351 Robinwood Rd., Gastonia, N. C. 28054.
