Broadus"Pat" McSwain, 101 years of age, resident of 1351 Robinwood Road Gastonia died Friday, January 29, 2010 at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

He was a native of Cleveland county and the son of the late Doctor Franklin McSwain and Margaret Holland McSwain.

A Memorial Service will be held at The First United Methodist Church 3 PM Monday, February 1, 2010 with Dr. James Westmoreland and Reverend George Freeman officiating.

The family will receive friends from 4 PM until 5 PM Sunday, January 31, 2010 in the Assembly Room at Covenant Village and immediately following the Memorial Service on Monday, February 1, 2010 in the church fellowship hall.

Interment will be private.

Pat was a member of The First United Methodist Church in Gastonia and served as chairman of the Board Of Stewards, He attended UNC-Chapel Hill, was a member of the Lions Club, Civitan Club and Optimist Club. He was elected to the Gastonia City School Board and later became chairman. When the Gaston County schools consolidated into one school system Pat continued as Chairman of the new County School Board and served on both boards for over 21 years. He served on Gastonia's Human Relations Committee during the 1950's and 1960's. Pat was the founder of WGNC-1450 Gastonia's first radio station. He rented the top floor of the Lawyers Building in downtown Gastonia and on March 23, 1939, WGNC signed on the air.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Linda McSwain of Gastonia, Doug and Alyce McSwain of Lake Junaluska, daughters and sons-in-law, Susan McSwain Ramsey and husband Dan of Myrtle Beach, Pat McSwain Hill and husband Richard of Kernersville, grandchildren and spouses, Patrick and Kristy McSwain of Gastonia, Michael McSwain of Asheville, David McSwain of Charlotte, Jennifer McSwain Martin and husband Ned of Charlotte, Robert McSwain and wife Tresca of Charlotte, Todd Ramsey of Los Angeles, Melissa O'Rourke of Myrtle Beach, Lydia Hill of Raleigh, Adam Hill of Kernersville, great-grandchildren, Julie McSwain, Connor O'Rourke, Peyton O'Rourke, Drake Bass and Landon Bass.In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by wife, Catherine Todd McSwain, son, Broadus Todd McSwain, brothers, Peyton McSwain, Landon McSwain and Holland McSwain.
